before the game

(by thumper) Ben Torentelli invited us to run the General Slot for the most complex C&C game in history. We hadnt planned on coming, but with such a challenging offer, who could resist. With BlackHearts on our side, who could say no..

Friday Night Discussion

Friday Jami and Rich showed up intime to pitch tent and put away a six pack (ea.) to provide us a warm welcome for our 4 o'clock arrival. Jim, Grendel, Joe, Tom and I pulled in around 4. (Blake and his two friends pulled in around 8p) As we arrived, we popped tops, set up and synced up. and we all asked "where are the players?" Ben and the Black Hearts were there, but not much more. The word was "well - they will show.." -- We walked the field - and began to think of contingency plans.

As dark grew near and players tricked in, we began to plan and scheme. A fine Beemish always seems to help. The weatherman reported a 20 degree evening ahead with day time temps in the mid 60s. And the fire was very popular. Around 8 steaks were molested, and around 9p Billy put on a 20 bls of Shrimp/frogmore stew. And Blake seemed in his element. -

Plans bounced around quite a bit with the unknown of "what teams do we have to work with?" looming ever more prominante. Joe's roll bounced from leading some shooters in reaction, to liasoning with Blackhearts, to running missions with Blake, Will & Justin plus 4 from the Splinter Cell. Witchpoo got Grendel, Rich, Jim, Tom. Deep and I were stuck at the main base.

Ben in his scemes had devised a plan to make us run 1 mission on the half hour, with each mission having 3 submissions- each to be run out of 3 separate bases. (Army Group North, Center and South). The evening plan closed with Witchpoo running mission out of Army Group South (behind the swamp), and Romeo running mission out of the Center base (old Alien base), and some mission team running mission out of the old clap base (army group north.) We planned on giving BlackHearts the clap base for the most rapid reinsertions to help support their tank, in the standing order to securing the AO between the 90 corner in the field over to Bubba's mud truck. We would figue out their mission team come morning.

Saturday

THUMPER : SAT 10:00AM: as the numbers had grown little - we had 70 to 80 players turn out and Ben came to us and suggested that the complexity of the game needed 200 to 500 players to run the way he had written in. I said - hell, lets play it. He grinned and that was it. We had committed to the most challenging C&C game ever, with 7 good roadkill guys, 3 first game invites and the BraveHearts and 4 splinter cell guys.

11:00am - We gave the briefing - and synced up with out late arrivale. Team Ram Rods showed up with around 5 and said they wanted to run mission. Bingo. you guys run mission out of clap base w/ Brave Hearts where Bobio was XO.

Another team "lucky" something showed up and said thay just wanted to shoot. I asked them to help work the area around the mud truck, to secure BraveHearts right flank.

12:00pm game on. 3 missions issues. Northing compliceted. take and hold 20 mintues, various places in the middle. One out of 3 complete.

12:00pm sat (by Grendel) Witchpoo Mission #1 -- Take and hold Oral for 20 min.
Squad Members - Grendel, Rich, Tom F. and Jim F.

We made our way past XO Tony's base and into the swamp to come up behind Kiev ("the Nam") and mistakenly held this position for 10 min or more thinking it is Oral during which a large group of Russians strolled past our position. Our small squad rightly let them pass without firing since it would have given away our position and the mission. After awhile 2 ref's came up and we turned over our card which they immediately walked off with. We soon realized we were in the wrong position and move across the road to Oral loosing Rich to a sniper in the process then we were met by ANDY the main field ref. We let him know about the mistake and the refs walking off with our card. We held the objective for our 20 min. One down. On our way back to the base for a new mission we were sniped at by the player who took out Rich but since we no longer needed the territory and were heading back to base we bypassed. Once back to the base we hooked up with reinserted Rich and awaited our next mission, while filling in as base security in the time being.

12:25 "ref we getting the next one at 12:30" - "I dont know - they will radio it in."
12:35 : Thumper : "ref - are we running missions on the half hour or hour - ben told us on the half hour" -- Ref: "uhh"
1:00pm : 3 missions issued - take and hold stuf in middle for 30 minutes. all mission issued.
1:05pm Ben shows at our base. THUMPER: "hey ben - we running mission on the hour?" BEN: "no - on the half hour, you should be on mission 3."
1:15pm : mission three : take and hold 3 things in the middle. - but unfortunately all of our mission teams were out.
2:00pm : mission 4 : we are in a groove - running 3 missions per half hour with Witchypoo and Romeo running their As$#s off.

6:00pm - dinner stand down

-- stories by Rich:

Mission #3 (Weaver, Me, Ron, Cory, Jim) Hold the castle for 30 minutes. 15 minutes into the mission the Death, Inc tank came down the main path. Weaver told Ron and Cory to flank through the woods and take out the tank. Ron circled around and the rest is history. Mission completed.

Mission #4 General led mission (night game). Attack Moscow and take control of it. There were 7 -10 on the mission including (Deep, Me, some blackhearts). Deep flanked with a couple and the rest of us went head on. Talk about an adreniline rush. We stormed (me and one other guy) from the far side and Deep and others came from the other side. Mission completed.

Mission #5 Hold the location in front of the Castle on the other side of the road for 30 minutes. (Night mission). Me and 1 other Blackheat. Held for 30 minutes. Several enemy in the area (most likely meant to counter us but they couldn't find the location). We layed silent. Mission completed.

Mission #6 Attack and destroy all Russian Bases. 1st mission on Sunday. Cory (Blackheart MVP and I) stormed the Russion fort closed to their campsite and he rocket launched and hit the fort. We were both eliminated and did not recieve credit. No Rep present.

Mission #7 XO led mission with Tony. Grendel, Weaver, Justin, Tony and Me were to take Tony to Kiev and hold the area for 30 minutes. We went through the swamp and came out behind the kiev. Grendel went right, I went left. Weaver was behind me in the palms and Justin was behind Grendel. I think it was Death, Inc/BodyCount who entered with 6 - 8 in thier squad. Grendel attacked, eliminated at least 1 and then he was eliminated. They swooped to my side and I eliminated 2 before being eliminated. Justin (medic) was eliminated and Weaver was the only one left. He will have to finish this one. blake added this: "Indeed. I believe Justin dropped another before he was eliminated and the guy layed there calling for a medic. I took out another guy (right beside the one Justin took out) so the medic ran up to the guys to help. He was behind a 'fort' with plenty of open holes in it. I just opened up on the holes and got the medic too. The three of them went walking and I see one more guy. I start shooting and a guy I never saw, peeled into me. Battle over... lost.. but fun! I'm not sure, but I think the guy who got me was a Calamari."

Saturday Night

We grill the rest of the meat and everyone suits up for evening play - except Jim and I. Even Grendel is going out "untill 10pm - Ill just hang out at the base." Deep takes over the General slot. Jim and I hang out by the fire and partake of stories and malts.

Game is called at 10:30pm because we only have 6 on the field.

Sunday AM

7:00am - Over coffee we revised the plan to ask Ron of BlackHearts to run with Witchpoo and to merge Witchpoo and Romeo together and focus on fewer missions, wrapping up each mission with a base law attach. Given the thin base defense we had, I figured they must be thin also, and provide us some easy "bonus points". Ron and Bobio were all for it.

8:00am - I walk on and Rich is there, and the first missions are cut. Go and take all three enemy bases.
THUMPER - "Hey Rich - I got a mission for you...!"

8:15am - Deep shows up, and we sync up. The plan is I'll stay scarce to avoid them getting general bonus points and check in near mission time. And I proceed to sweep the swamp and rear areas for props. I find one ammo bag and 5 gold bricks down near the boats.

10:00am - General Led mission to take/hold the castle at the end of our road. This turns out to be an enemy mission also. We end up getting waxed, and I lay low on the edge of the objective. As a ref shows up I call in an air strike and strip the mission from them, and score it for us. Quite the morning for some guy with no gun.

ROMEO
REPORTS
First Bell - We moved out a little slow and disorganized and quickly learned that the Russians had a better plan. By dumping the three army concept, Romeo moved to our first mission facing the entire strength of the Russian forces. Our First mission to capture and hold an area on the far side of
the corner moved steadily at first. Supported by the Blackhearts (A very devastating unit at only partial strength), we pushed the angle and quickly realized our forces were facing a 2 to 1 deficit.

We were eventually pushed back to the recess of paths extending from our bases.

Unfortunately, our next mission was to hold an area close to our first mission. After another unsuccessful push, we began moving along the swamp as a sort of back door. We would find this route to be our only avenue of attack all day.

Our next two missions involved blowing buildings on the far side of the field; Witchypoo had a mission next door, so I followed Grendel and Co through the muck again. After tracking down some refs, I used a LAW to blow the T-34 factory I believe.

That evening, I went off lone-wolfing. Behind in the point score, I was searching for props and trying for a nice juicy general kill. I managed to find a frequency chart and take out three unsuspecting Damage, inc players who had the same idea. I took up position in a radio tower 15 meters from the Russian base and spent the next hour and a half listening in on conversations. I took out two unsuspecting Red players and spent the next ten minutes watching 7 other players try to flush me out.

On a personal level, I had the chance to determine why we were always facing overwhelming odds in every assault. Despite at least four enemy eliminations while in the tower, (one a gog shot) no enemy players returned to the stage area with me. This is when we confirmed as a group that Russians returned to camp cleaned up and went in at will. Insertions at will included as I learned sitting at their stage. Thoroughly pissed, I called it a night and slept. Deep, Rich and Tom played on a while longer.

Sunday we rolled as a squad so I have no Romeo or individual items of merit. One item of note, Once the Russians were forced to leave after being eliminated and we began running as one team, the show went exceptionally better for us as a team. I guess Aichi and company used our Free Finale trick against us this time with success.

As a side note, I would like to officially start some dialogue about equipping each squad with at least two small LAW/Bazookas - whatever the game will allow, I have begun to see how such a small tool can do so much to eliminate buildings, players in mass formations, tanks. We would not have kept it so close without them this weekend.

CLOSING

Tips for Ben : #1 at 7:30am Sunday - I get briefed by Ron (of Team BlackHearts) and confirmed by others that our spy (Tom - Roadkill invitee) reported that the female base ref for the Russians had been providing advansed mission objectives before the missions were issued and even encougaing the Russian General to act on the information at times on Saturday - which may explain why we never found a mission prop. This got trickled up to Ben who pulled the female Russian base ref out of the game for Sunday.
Ben - please Seal your mission cards individually in envelopes and time stamp them when they are to be opened and then broadcast and confirm when to open each. This "reffing loophole" affected the game, and our own honor put our side at a serious disadvantage - particularly when the missions included props. Many teams will take advantage of holes in game administration. Hell - we had the mission cards for Saturday in front of us all day - we just didnt act on the information.

Tip#2 : The 12:30pm Saturday mission being issued at 1:00pm and the 1:00 mission being issues at 1:15pm and the 1:30 mission being issued at 1:30 helped prevent our army from getting in the groove of mission running. This was magnified by the props involved and the small number of players. Our base ref was asked 3 times is there was a 12:30 mission and he was asked to confirm with gamesmaster "Andy", which he did. We were then told by our base ref there was no 12:30 mission - until you wandered in 45 minutes after the fact and then we were to "make up the mission." If this was intentional for game play I understand, but I dont think it was. Debrief "Base Ref John" for his perspective. The mission points lost hurt, but the lack of momentum obtained was devestating for mission teams morale.

Tip #3 : At the Sat 8:00pm mission issue (which started the night play), our mission team was shot out as they left the base from behind our base. Pretty impressive movement for a team to get down behind our base during the dinner stand down. I wonder if they picked up props on the way? When you add this to the Russian base ref issue you may want to look further into the responsible parties for this behavior. As gamesmaster at TriggerTyme I would consider this stretch of the rules grounds for banning the team responsible from being invited to future events. "Winning at all cost" behavior is bad for the sport.
See DeepFreeze for his perspective of this event. Please let me know what you find out.

Tip #4 : Please work hard to balance the speedball teams.

Final Score

By dinner sat Germans down 1100. By Sunday AM Germans down 1600. By game end Germans down 800.
Russians : 4800 -- Germans 4000
